Recently I’ve noticed some changes in the behavior of some of my cats. Little Foot 2 is so clingy that I can barely get anything done. She wants to sit in my lap wherever I go. Usually, she’ll only want to cuddle at night or if I am sitting at my computer. I thought nothing of it until I also noticed Smoky, an older male, wanting to sit on my lap every time I sat down. He is not much of a “lap cat.”
Then Neo, a younger male, became way more clingy than he had ever been. Later in the morning, I noticed two males, Bob (a young kitten) and T’Hote (male about 3 years old) tearing through the house like mad cats. They were chasing each other, jumping over anything in their path, up the cat tree then down the cat tree, and off to the other room just to do it all over again! These cats play but not with a vengeance like this morning…
If that was not enough, Tiger, a middle-aged kitty, was acting way more cautious than normal. He does not appear to like any of the other cats except Smoky and he was being stand-offish about coming in to eat. Usually, he’d find his place to lay down and sleep soundly all night, making sure no one can disturb him. But last night he was up and around, acting anxious.
So this is 5 out of 11 of my cats acting strange. My question is why? What is different from any other day? Tonight there is a SUPER MOON. Can that have anything to do with this strange behavior? I did some digging on this subject and from what I could find there is currently no scientific evidence to confirm or deny that the moon has anything to do with cat behavior.
However, there are lots of stories confirming the idea that cat behavior can change because of the super moon. Cat owners have written stories of their cats behaving differently during the time of a full moon and a new moon as well. There’s even an increase in emergency visits to veterinary clinics during a full moon.
Can all this be just a coincidence? The word lunatic came about due to the belief that the moon can make one mad. At petplace.com they say, “animals seem to be ultra sensitive at this time [supermoon], increasing the ability to sense the stress around us. Animals tend to notice the interaction quicker as it is a part of their survival instinct to stay away from danger.”
All I know about this is my cats are acting differently. Other people are experiencing the same occurrence. Maybe it is a coincidence, maybe not. I choose to believe it has something to do with the moon.
I am going to sit back and enjoy the Supermoon tonight. I hope you do the same. I will have at least one cat, maybe two, in my lap tonight.
